Think twice before choosing (right costume)

Počas môjho pobytu v Novom Mexiku som sa ešte viac (ako počas môjho pobytu v Keni pred rokom) zaoberala spôsobom, akým sa ľudia zaodievajú – podľa čoho si oblečenie vyberajú, čo chcú svojím zovňajškom okoliu naznačiť a čo naopak zamlčať. So stupňujúcim sa popiskovaním mužov na moju adresu pribúdalo i rečníckych otázok na tému vyzdvihnutia či naopak potláčania etnickej, náboženskej či sexuálnej orientácie a rodu prostredníctvom šiat.
During my stay in New Mexico, I used to think (even more than during my stay in Kenya before) about the way of clothing – how people choose their clothes; what do they want and don’t want to say by their outfits. The growth of male whistling towards my appearance raised more rhetorical questions about showing or hiding the symbols and expressions of ethnic, religious or sexual orientation, as well as gender through particular dress.

O vestičkách, zásterkách či opaskoch mnohých farieb, lemovaní, vzorov, prešívaní a korálikov ani nehovoriac. Nebol to len kostým, bol to životný štýl. Nie náhodou som si domov z Kene doniesla niekoľko desiatok x-metrových šatiek a plachiet, ktoré nosievam na hlave, na krku, cez plecia či okolo pása – podľa toho, na aký šialený vzor a krikľavú farbu mám práve náladu. Dokonca som maminu prinútila, aby mi z niektorých látok ušila sukne (a zo zvyškov multifunkčné nekonečné šály). Inšpirácia a transformácia do novej podoby. Dúfam, že som použitím kenských vzorov v slovenskom odeve porušila nejaké pravidlo a urazila kultúru konkrétneho kmeňa. Zámerne spomínam len Keňu, nie Afriku, lebo tú celú som nemala čas preskúmať.
As Slovak woman who used to live her childhood and youth by moving between trainings and night or weekend performances with traditional folk group: I don’t mind to wear visible ornaments in hair, shirt with round neckline and draped short sleeves, short pleated skirts. It’s the same with vests, aprons or belts of many colors, edging, patterns, stitching and beads – I like all of that. For me it was not just a costume, it was a lifestyle. After my come-back home from Kenya I brought dozens of x-meters long scarves and sheets. Nowadays I put them on my head, neck, shoulders or around my waist depends on how do I feel about certain crazy pattern and shiny color at the moment. I forced my mom to create stylish skirts by using some of these materials (and multifunctional endless scarves from the residues). It is nice inspiration and transformation into a new form. I hope by using these Kenyan patterns in Slovak clothing I’m not violating any cultural rule or tradition of particular tribe. Intentionally I say Kenya, not Africa, because I haven’t had time to explore whole African continent.

V novom Mexiku to bolo trochu iné.
It was a bit different in New Mexico. At the end of October (the right time for Halloween party preparation) my colleagues from Media Literacy Project went through a number of popular websites with Halloween Costumes for rent. Immediately they found labels and images based on racial, ethnic and gender stereotypes. "Sexy Indian costumes" was a part of a special costume category where you could find dresses called "Sexy Rain Dancing Diva Indian Costume" or "Sexy Tribal Trouble Indian Costume". Then I really met those girls (of white color – trying to look like "American Indians" in their moccasins with beads, mini-skirts with fringes and feathers braided in two hair-braids) on the streets of Albuquerque.

Podľa mňa sú však "indigenous people" ľudia so svojou kultúrou a rodinami, ktorí si zaslúžia úctu, rešpekt a dôstojnosť, nie posmešky. Azda zasvieti.
Maybe Johnny Depp (who was adopted by native American woman after the shooting of the movie The Lone Ranger) has a different opinion. In my opinion, however, "indigenous people" are people with their own culture and families who deserve dignity and respect, not ridicule. Think twice before choosing right costume. I discreetly pointed out (already in the fall issue of the Inspire magazine) that during the future selection of costumes we could be warned by this kind of educational red light in our head. Let’s hope it will light.

Found & (almost) Lost heART @ ABQ

Every single little big city works on similar principles: strange individuals in public transport, hipster couples in front of music clubs, families in shopping centers. Artists are working on their art on regular basis in urban spaces or on occasional basis at community events. RailYards Market (RYM; located into the former railway depot) was one of them. I used to go there every Sunday during the summer and fall. There were always hippie headbands and wristbands, printed t-shirts and bags based on the series Breaking Bad or the movie Book of Life (therefore more "craft" than "art"). But at the end of RYM 2014 season I found art – very close to my taste and heart.

Sprvu som si ten malý stánok uprostred priestoru, plného voňavej kávy, čerstvého jedla, domácej hudobnej produkcie a ľudskej vravy ani nevšimla.
I almost missed that little booth in the middle of market’s space, full of fragrant coffee, fresh food, local music production and mixture of human voices. It was covered by small canvas or wooden squares with painted faces of supernatural animals or comic book characters. A lot of black straight lines, colored dots, clarified teeth and slanted eyes – that could be the shortest description of original creation of gifted native American man. Brett Kennedy is passionate about painting (under the label: Uzumaticreations), as well as music (he is drummer at the band: Akari). Always smiling young man spoke enthusiastically about his time in Denver and Albuquerque. At that day I bought from him two small abstract paintings. This was followed by a classic exchange of business cards and “friend” activity on social networks.
Nie je to náhoda, no viac neprezradím. Ale odfotiť si ma môžete!” :)
A week later I wanted to go to RYM again with very clear intentto procure a painting that Brett posted online the day before. Simple heart in shades of pink with two hands inside. The symbolism looks like the scene from romantic soap opera, I know. But I was really attracted by so-called New Mexican appeal. When I saw the painting “live”, it was about 5 times larger than I imagined. But it was already decided, it had to be mine. I was proudly walking through railway depot (like at "free hugs" happening) with the painting in my hands: "I found heART in Albuquerque. It is no coincidence, but I’ll no tell you more. Of course, you can take a photo of me!" :)

I found heART in Albuquerque. And I almost lost it. Therefore, do not ask me how I transported that over-sized painting from New Mexico to Slovakia. I almost left it wrapped at the post office. It cost so much energy and money. Questions like, "Where is Slovakia?" or "Is Slovakia and Slovak republic the same state?" are just funny bonuses. But the heart is at home: in Bratislava for now. And I recommend everyone to watch the art-creation of this talented guy. Sometimes Brett’s paintings can be found for free in the streets of ABQ (just follow the "Free Art Friday" fanpage). Again I have to regret that I am not there right now...

Beautiful minds everywhere (new friendships @ U.S.)

Posielam ďalší pozdrav zo Spojených štátov, kam vela ľudí odchádza žiť svoj „americký sen“ – s platnými vízami, či bez. So mnou je to troche iné. Inak by komunitné výmenné pobyty nemali zmysel.
Ja som si našla skvelé parťáčky takmer okamžite (na základe svojského humoru): Samar z Libanonu, Tachminu z Tadžikistanu, Emmy z Indonézie a kopec ďalších zaujímavých blízkych. A spoznala som aj skvelého lídra z Vietnamu: Pána Phuca…

Greetings from the United States, where many people are coming to live "American Dream" with a valid visa or not. It's a little different for me. I'm here for a limited time (couple of months only) – ready to absorb everything important and inspiring at my host organization. Then I should apply and share this experience and knowledge at home, in Slovakia like my colleagues, co-fellows – great community leaders from Eastern Europe, South America, Asia or Africa. Otherwise the community solutions programs and exchanges would not make sense.
During the initial days in a new environment the most important thing is: to walk with an open mind & heart, to look around and to find new soul-mates during get-to-know-each-other activities (eventhough Skype-calls home and check-in activities on Facebook are probably also important too). I found great “buddies” almost immediately (on the basis of common sense of humor): Samar from Lebanon, Takhmina from Tajikistan, Emmy from Indonesia and a lot of other interesting friends around me. I also met in DC a great leader from Vietnam: Mr. Phuc...

Mr. Phuc, our blind colleague from my current fellowship in the U.S., sent us an email recently. According to him: it seemed that we took a lot of photos at the beginning of our journey in Washington, DC. He asked us: “If you have any nice pictures (of me with you) in your computer would you be willing to send them to Vietnam? My wife and especially my two children are curious about their father’s activities – far away from home, in big America...” Maybe I'm just hyper-sensitive or maybe I miss my Slovak relatives a lot in New Mexico, but that email made me cry. It was so sweet and sad at the same time. So I started (at the most inconvenient moment, under the time-pressure) to check hundreds of photos – in order to make his family happier and content. I hope they liked these 2-3 pictures!

Mám radosť zo všetkých týchto situácií a ľudí okolo. Budem sa snažiť udržať si tieto kamarátstva.

Mr. Phuc, or "Father Phuc" (as we call him) wasn’t a blind man from the beginning of his life. As a child he could see, watch, observe everything around him. So he’s able to imagine the colors and understand such an expression as: "beautiful blue sky”; or “freshly cut green grass"…
I remember particular lunch-situation from August – back in DC: I interrupted an interesting conversation between great entertainer Samar and Mr. Phuc. When Samar saw me, she immediately changed the topic of conversation. Samar asked Mr. Phuc to describe me – just according to my face and by my voice: how tall am I; what is the color of my eyes; how long is my hair; what about my figure or smile... Mr. Phuc was reluctant at the beginning, but then he described me as a nice fairy… Not so far from the truth – what do you think? New-Mexican climate, constant sunshine and massive preparation for "Los Muertos" celebration made me dress in that “back-to-the-roots/woods” way :) I'have been enjoying all these situations and people around me. I will try to keep these friendships.
