RSD 2017: Wonderful day spent in record stores

What a wonderful day – spent in record stores across the entire Auckland! April 22 was dedicated to the records! It is always a pleasure (and not necessarily a guilty pleasure) to attend a very special annual event, called Record store day (RSD). During that day you can buy some good vinyls, CDs or even cassettes; listen to the concerts of local bands and meet people of all ages who care about music, and not just recorded one.

My husband and me tried to visit all the stores that joined global music event: RSD and offered us special releases of our favourite vinyls. I was already pregnant, so we made more breaks for decaf coffee and mineral water... There were so many fathers and mothers with their children in music stores enjoying music. I hope next year already three of us (our little big family) will make the same tour and enjoy it too.

In Slovakia I support Slovak musicians and usually go to Wegart – very good records' store in the heart of Bratislava city. Here in Auckland I do support local artists too. There are quite many good music stores in the city – hard to choose the best one. Each one is unique. On Saturday we visited Flying Out store and watched few concerts there. There I also got a beautiful new vinyl of New Zealand based singer: Lawrence Arabia. I really like his lyrics and melodies.

There is so much great music out there. Are you planning to attend Record Store Day next year? Save some money for exclusive records and go ahead. Highly recommended event!

Pacific flora and nostalgia for home

Počas dvojtýždňového maratónu umenia s názvom ArtWeek Auckland sa dá natrafiť na všelijakých zaujímavých ľudí a situácie. Aj si zaspomínať nostalgicky na domov.

During the two-week marathon of art titled Artweek Auckland you can spot many interesting people, situations and think nostalgically about home.

Stále si stojím za tým, že lokálnu kultúru možno spoznávať vďaka rozhovorom s miestnymi ľuďmi, ale aj vďaka ich kultúre a umeniu. Toho umenia som za posledné týždne mala možnosť odsledovať habadej. V Aucklande sa totiž odohrával dvojtýždňový maratón, ktorý sa kedysi vmestil do týždňa – ArtWeek Auckland. Po meste billboardy, v krabiciach tisícky vytlačených brožúrok s programom, rozdeleným podľa štvrtí. Program pre celé rodiny (v Devonporte), otvorené ateliéry (v bývalej Nedeľnej škole), kresby kriedami po chodníkoch (na ulici Ponsonby), pozorovanie umenia cez okuliare virtuálnej reality (na námestí Aotea), cyklo-túry za umením (Electric Night) a do večera otvorené galérie (Late night art) – niečo ako naša Noc múzeí a galeríí a Biela noc dohromady, akurát trvajúca dva týždne.

I think that local culture can be explored through the interviews with local people, but also through the local culture and art. In past two weeks I had more than enough opportunities to explore local kiwi-art. There is going on a two week art-marathon in Auckland now – Artweek Auckland (in past all the events were probably able to fit into one week). There are thematic billboards around the town; thousands of printed brochures with the program sorted by locations of neighborhoods; the activities for the whole family (Devonport); open Studios (former Sunday school); chalk-drawing on the paths (Ponsonby road); art-exploration through virtual reality glasses (Aotea Square); art cycle-tours (Electric Night); galleries opened all night long (Late night art). It’s something similar to Slovak Night of museums/galleries and White night together, lasting two weeks.

V neďalekom Štúdiu One (v maorčine Toi Tu) na ulici Ponsonby sa toho deje celoročne dosť veľa v krátkych intervaloch – niekoľko výstav do mesiaca, kurzy kreslenia či kameramanskej práce, workshopy pre školopovinné deti, komunitné aktivity pre miestnu mládež, podpora znevýhodnených ľudí. Pred pár dňami tam dokonca mieste rádio Base FM usporiadalo výstavu obalov platní s príbehmi lokálnych Djov. Niektoré platne boli riadne retro a tie tínejdžerské spomienky na ne – ešte lepšie!

Nearby StudioOne / Toi Tu on Ponsonby road is packed with many short interval activities, throughout the year there are: few exhibitions openings a month, drawing courses and cinematography workshops, after-school activities for children, community activities for local youth and support for people with special needs too. A few days ago a local radio station Base FM hosted an exhibition there. Inside walls were covered with vinyls’ covers with stories of local DJs behind. Some records were really from past-era (retro mood) with teenage memories attached to them – even better!

V tomto Štúdiu One ma zaujala aj výstava, ktorú tvorili krikľavé stuhy do vlasov, votkané do plastových rohoží, ktoré tvorili výrazné kvety. Musela som sa pri nich nechať odfotiť. Autorka Serene Timoteo nimi vzdala hold tradičnému remeslu z oblasti Pacifiku a jej starým rodičom, ktorí sa starali o pestrofarebnú záhradu. V 60. rokoch minulého storočia sa presunuli zo Samoy do Aucklandu. Pacifická flóra môže vyvolať nostalgiu a túžbu po rodisku, ale tiež môže upevniť presvedčenie – že presun bol dobrou voľbou a hodnotný život sa dá prežiť aj na inom mieste. Tomu prisťahovalci a prisťahovalkyne (a tak trochu aj ja) musia rozumieť.

An extraordinary exhibition impressed me in Studio One / Toi Tu on Ponsonby road. Silk hair-ribbons woven into plastic mats formed significant colorful flowers. I had to have a picture in front of them. The artist: Serene Timoteo paid a tribute to the traditional crafts of the Pacific region, as well as to her grandparents who used to take care of a beautiful garden in past. They moved to Auckland from Samoa in 1960s. Pacific flora can induce home-sick and nostalgia for the hometown, but it can also reinforce the belief – that the move was a good choice and people can start to live a valuable life anywhere. Immigrants (me too a bit) understand it very well.
