Too nice to be real? (Historic Albuquerque)

I'm not going to tell you now how I ended up in Albuquerque almost the capital of New Mexico. Although the mecca of art, art-galleries and auctions: Santa Fe is the official capital, does not work in that way. Good friend of mine tried to explain to me: why. Years ago when the city council was supposed to decide whether to build a prison, or university Santa Fe chose the prison (one of the cruelest in the U.S., you can see it in the film "Natural Born Killers"). So Albuquerque (ABQ or Burque, as local people usually call it) is more alive, University town very similar to Bratislava (when we compare the population of both cities). It’s just constructed more into width than depth. If you want to live here you will have to buy or rent a car (or use a bike – for short distances).

Ak naskočíte do lokálneho autobusu č. 66, končiaceho na hlavnej vlakovej a autobusovej stanici v centre ABQ, do minúty si spravíte obraz (akoby z TV seriálu "Breaking Bad", alebo starších amerických filmov) o rôznych typoch ľudí: výrazne potetované a zároveň výrazne obézne osoby s pollitrovkou koly v ruke; staručkí vojenskí veteráni v šiltovkách a obnosených kabátoch trpiaci samomluvou; bývalý motorkári s dlhými fúzami a džínsovými vestami; mladí hip-hopperi s nohavicami stiahnutými nebezpečne pod zadok, a aj na drogách či alkohole závislé indivíduá... Stretávam len mizivé percento dám s dobrým vkusom v odievaní či v hudbe (hrajúcej z ich smartfónov).

If you use public transport and take the local bus no. 66 (with ending station at the main train and bus station in downtown ABQ), in few minutes you will make a picture (whether or not you’ve watched TV series "Breaking Bad" or older American films) about the different types of people here: significantly tattooed and obese people with a half liter of coke in their hands; old military veterans wearing caps & coats and leading a monologue with themselves; former motor-bikers with long mustache and denim vests; young hip-hop guys with pants placed dangerously low; and even drug or alcohol addicted people... I meet only a tiny percentage of ladies with a good taste in apparel or music (loudly played from their smartphones).

If you ask local people: "Where we can take a walk?", they will get nervous. In fact in ABQ there are so few places for nice walk. There is: Nob Hill area (popular among tourists); then ABQ Down-town (for those who love art and culture); then ABQ Up-town (for those who like shopping, shopping centers and multicultural restaurants); or city-inside-city - historic center (preserved as tourist attraction) of Albuquerque - Historic Old Town. I also went there to buy souvenirs for my people: dream catchers, badges and magnets with skeletons (Los Muertos / All Saints celebration is coming), painted corn-beads, t-shirts with images of sugar skulls. I wasn’t brave enough to by moccasins with beads, patterned leather boots, cowboy hats and steel buckles for belts. It was too much for me. So for a quick photo-shooting: I weared Converse-sneakers from local retail store; a striped mini-dress from the second hand store, called Buffalo exchange. I also put on myself: head-bend from Slovakia (thanks to Magaela). As a part of scene: there had to be placed all these big teddy-bears from Old Town ABQ (often destroyed by the children of tourists, local dogs and strong sunlight). Staring to the sun is common activity in Albuquerque where the sun shines 310 days a year! So I try not to wear sunglasses, but sometimes take a sun-bath and adore that unique ABQ sky (brilliant blue, almost without clouds). Too nice to be real, ha?! I’d like to send one kind smile and a bundle of sun-rays to all of you right now!
