Hoping & shopping before Christmas

A takto pred dvoma týždňami sa v bratislavskej cvernovke dolaďovali posledné detaily pred spustením zimnej dizajn burzy s hand-made tvorbou a doplnkami.
One week ago all people were preparing themselves for celebrating or spending Christmas holidays. And two weeks ago there was a fine-tuning of last small details in Bratislava’s Cvernovka-space before the start of design market with hand-made products and accessories. At that place there wasn’t a chance to keep money in purse – people were spending a lot of money with the knowledge, that Christmas present from that place not everybody will wear in our city... It is necessary to pay for the genuineness and it is good to support Slovak design which is still quite rare in our country (even if we can hear about market saturation according to huge amounts of product-sellers at hand-made website sashe.sk).

Celý jeden víkend v polovici decembra sme so spolužiačkou mali v pláne zbierať materiál pre náš dokument o Winter urban markete v Cvernovke. Teda šlo o filmársku prácu, nie o míňanie peňazí v rámci predvianočných nákupov – teda aspoň sme v to obe dúfali. Lenže popri zaznamenávaní rozhovorov s tvorkyňami a autorkami značiek (Bu!, Samo & Sato, Fashion recycling lab) sa naše rozhodnutie neupevňovalo. Pribudli čelenky od Hogo fogo a pár originálnych šiat od Yaxi Taxi. Berieme to tak, že sme podporili sme ľudí, ktorí svoj talent pretavili do konkrétnej hand-made tvorby a svoje výrobky posúvajú do nových rúk.
I had a plan with my schoolmate for the whole weekend in the middle of december – to collect material for our documentary about Winter urban market in Cvernovka gallery. So it was film-making work, not spending money in the name of Christmas shopping – we were hoping for our strong will. But besides the recording of interviews with authors and creators of brands (Bu!, Samo& Sato, Fashion recycling lab) our resolution wasn’t strong enough. We bought few forehead ribbons made by Hogo fogo and a pair of original clothes made by Yaxi taxi. Let’s take it as the support of people who transformed their talent into particular hand-made production and they are looking for new owners for these products.

Vtedy som načrela do svojho detstva a vytiahla jeden zo zážitkov o imaginárnom kámošovi mojej mladšej sestry.
One hundred minutes of material is downloaded in my computer and ready for editing. Photos from this year will be scanned from film in few weeks. So I am passing the time by looking back into the archive and reminding my memories from previous years of urban markets. Back then I returned into the childhood and found one of the adventures about imaginary friend of my younger sister. In honour of silent fellows and trusty friendships I walked a cardboard lomo-dog in Cvernovka-space. I also presented in public my new warm neckcloth and green retro-dress (got it for few euros from second-hand as usual).

After you visit one of development countries you will appreciate hand-made products and support their creators. But at the same time you will realize that there is no need to spend money on trifles. It is OK to buy one pair of earing instead of eleven pairs. It is not written anywhere that if we have money today we will have money also tomorrow. It is not certain that we will be here tomorrow. So don’t take anything for granted!

I am proud of myself a bit! I don’t buy every jewellery and clothes without thinking only of me, but most likely as Christmas presents for my close friends – who probably wouldn’t have enough courage to try and buy them. I also don’t undertake actions of type: „I have to buy something from that seller because nobody is interested in her products – I can’t stand to let her go home sad“. I am able to forbid myself to buy all these strange pillows, hand-bags or earings, which would propably catch the dust at my home.

Ak doma vyrábate šperky či šijete odevy – bezpochyby vás to inšpiruje a namotivuje – ukázať svoju tvorbu na verejnosti a získať spätnú väzbu v podobe záujmu nakupujúcich. Predsavzatie do nového roka? Podporovať slovenský dizajn, no zároveň šetriť. Či to ide dohromady, uvidím už o pár týždňov...
These urban markets are nice attacks on your purses on one hand, but also good starter of our fantasy on the other one. If you create jewellery or sew original clothes at home – it will inspire and motivate you, indeed, to show your work in public and get feed-back from potential customers. This year about six dozens of sellers and hundreds of visitors did it! What about New Year’s resolution? To support Slovak design, but also to save money. If it fits together we will see in few weeks...

Week of Bratislava fog

Pripomína mi to jednu poviedku od Borisa Viana – kde hrala dôležitú úlohu hustá hmla a hlavná postava príbehu cítila potrebu experimentovať. Povyzliekal sa do naha a vyšiel slobodne do ulíc mesta. Aké bolo jeho prekvapenie, keď vonku narážal do iných ľudí – takisto vyzlečených do naha... Čas, keď sa originalita premieňa na uniformitu. Čo mi to len pripomína?
What’s going on at the beginning of winter? The week of Bratislava’s fog! Sun has not appeared in the sky for so many days. People are walking next to each other anonymously, they don’t need to smile on purpose – because they’re hidden, almost invisible in that fog.
It reminds me one story written by Boris Vian – where the thick fog was very important element and the main protagonist felt the need to experiment. He put off all his clothes and went out completelly naked for a city-walk. How was he surprised when he met other people outside – also with no clothes on... It was the time, when the originality is changing to the uniformity. What does this remind me?

Na prelome novembra a decembra som si pozrela niekoľko snímok z ponuky festivalu dokumentárnych filmov o ľudskoprávnej problematike Jeden svet. Väčšina dokumentov sa zaoberala nedodržiavaním ľudských práv a diskrimináciou – či už na základe politického presvedčenia, pohlavia/rodu, sexuálnej orientácie alebo rasového pôvodu. Akoby farba pleti o niečo dôležitom vypovedala. Akoby farba očí, vlasov či šiat o niečom vypovedala...
At the end of november and at the beginning of december I saw some movies from the program of documentary film-festival about human rights topic – One world. The most of the documentaries were focused on the non-application of human rights and on discrimination – based on political belief, sex/gender, sexual orientation or rase origin. Does this mean that the colour of skin can tell us something important? Does this mean that the colour of eyes, hair or clothes can tell us more about the person?

When I was in London, I was little bit upset – that I am not interesting for the citizens (no more, no less than other people). Girls didn’t check my colorfull fashion creations from the fast-food window. They didn’t comment the length of my red hair. Lots of different people passed through that big city everyday, so the expression – to be unique means something else. This multicultural mixture doesn’t surprise anybody there. People can coexist next to the others very well. The famous movie-director Terry Gillian said about London one “compliment” – from the least likely cities in the world London is the best.

The power of colours are growing up to the public in very slow tempo. Our citizens are understanding and accepting hard the migration and integration of foreign peple in Slovakia. Also happy colours are appearing in their wardrobes sporadically. But it seems that this winter it will be better, so I am curious about that.
It is the best to put on wellingtons during the time, whene there is not snowing outside yet. You can buy wellies for ten or fifteen euros anywhere – in your favourite colour and shape (what is the best for the rest of your outfit: especially the bag or scarf). Very visible green coat whith double-row stiching (from second hand as usual) is one of my favourite pieces of clothing. We used to shout in kindergarden very strange expression: „Green and blue combination is the best for loco.“ If this is true, then I am probably the loco. But I don’t feel the shame. In green-blue combination I can’t see anything wrong.

Mám to spočítané!
What I like the most in my loved city on the Danube river is that attention of unknown people on the streets. I counted it! Nine from ten people turned/twisted back just because of my outfit. But it is the pity that they are not able to give you back offered smile, which I usually send to them. The most of them are moving through the city very mechanically, they are thinking about something completelly else. They are running from their work on the way: Christmas market, supermarket and home. During that replacement they are just planning about what to buy for the rest of family, how to prepare Christmas dinner etc.
Lately I completed my green-blue outfit with unusual retro-glasses. I bought them in Bucharest during open-air vintage market. The world looks more beautiful through these glasses. Maybe that blue-violet filter can penetrate that fog and I am able to see more than the others. Maybe it is good, maybe not. But that astonishment from my face hasn’t vanished yet..

Remember November outfit

I decided to update my blog on this website at a certain magical dates. For the first time it worked with five elevens (11. 11. 11 at 11:11), today I will try it with number one and two (22. 11. at 22:11). In the range of these two dates there is another numerically symbolic and mostly historically important date – mostly meaningful for the people from East-European countries. The 17th of November 1989 is in our history written as the day of fall of communistic regime in Czecho-Slovakia, the day of Velvet revolution, the day of state borders’ opening, the day of democracy beginning and the students’ day (in memory of students’ activism few decades before).
Probably not all readers of this blog (specially those, who where born after 1989; and ones, who have lived abroad) can imagine the difference between these two radical political regimes. I don’t want to write here about unfreedom of living in that period. I will rather mention only the capture how we were suffering because of the way of wearing…

Všetkých spolužiakov a spolužiačky v škole v 80-tych rokoch rodičia obliekali do rovnakých jednotvárnych oblečení zo syntetických materiálov bez štipky vkusu či invencie.
In 80s parents of my schoolmates used to prepare clothes for them – consisted of the same monotonous pieces and synthetic materials – without a touch of invention or taste. Our pioneer monkey-dress were almost the same like current non-airy and unconfortable school uniforms of kids in many African countries. There wasn't anything different in shops – any inspiration from magazines or another traditional media. Luckilly my grandfather was good at sewing on sewing-machine and my grand-mother was able to create unique accessories from wool using the knitting needles.
My mother likes improvisation, re-using old materials, re-creating new clothes from the old ones. Once she sewed for me and my sisters few skirts and coats from her pregnancy-dress. Mom is able to combine uncombined materials. On my sister’s cotton polo-neck sweater she sewed few geometrical shapes from cutoff tights, later she stitched dog-kennel with hairy doggy (made from old coat‘s fleece material) on another sister’s pullover. Our mother used to cover the edges of my ruffle-skirts with the weird patch. There was printed the word „bonroy“ on it and there was whole roll of that patch-tape at our home (don‘t know from where).

Trochu symbolicky – v magické a symbolické dátumy.
No napríklad také zmeny v módnych štýloch a trendoch v obliekaní určite uvítame pozitívne...
None of my family has put any limits in dressing-style. Neither then, nor now. Improvisation and invention is on the first place of our fashion-choosing chart. Sometimes it is quite difficult to guess the age and time-enlistment of certain outfit-pieces, and that is perfect! Originality and timelessness is the priority. I will need my crazy fur cap from the second-hand in this coldness outside as often as the ice-queen from that famous fairy-tale or as a small Soviet school-girl from previous regime. It is possible to wear this knitting black wool scarf (in East-Slovak speech called the “hustka” – also from second-hand) in every season with every type of outfit. I put it on my shoulders during this november time not for the first time. It is symbolic meaning behind it because of all these symbolic and magical dates. Just to not to forget – about the importance of my family in my life; the importance of that November in the life of my family and in the history of our society.
I don’t know how many magical dates I will cover this winter, but november was like that – full of numerical symbolism, actions on purpose and interpersonal coincidences. We are not able to predict any things. It is the same situation with the prognosis of how many changes of political regimes we can live personally (during one simple life). But we are welcoming all changes in fashion-styles and wearing-trends with very positive reactions…

What’s your name? Autumn!

Pamätáte si smutňákovský príbeh o láske „500 dní so Summer“?
Do you remember very sad story „500 days of Summer”? If yes, then you can surely remember the face of the main character, when the new woman of his life will tell him her name at the end of the movie…

While Tom’s (hopeless romantic guy) discovering the passions of his life other people are smiling with him. Because we can recognize that situation very well, we are living that moment every season. And because autumn forgot to visit Slovakia this year, I am enjoying my affection in neo-nomadic style, which will occupy my wardrobe for coming months (actually whole winter). Nomadic mood is characteristic for this winter.

Symbolický dátum a Martin na bielom koni so sebou prvý sneh nepriniesol, ale nízke teploty a podivná hmla vonku nás môžu inšpirovať k účelovému, ale zároveň vkusnému navrstvovaniu svojho oblečenia. A tak to mám rada.
Symbolic date and Martin on a white horse didn’t bring first snow to our country, but low temperatures and strange fog outside can inspire us to purpose-built layering of our clothes (but with taste!). That’s the way I like it.

Pred očami mám stále fotografie z cyklu „The new Gypsies“, kde boli vyobrazení najrôznejší ľudia, žijúci alternatívnym životným štýlom.
In front of my eyes i have the photos from the cycle „The new Gypsies“ where they were shown people with alternative life-styles. Also their way of dressing was so free and visually attractive. So i have pulled out from my wardrobe riding boots and mandala-dress (from second-hand), fur coat of my mom, wooden beads and knit headband (from my friend bought in London’s Camden town) – and neo-nomadic girl appeared!
